Three simple steps to planting beautiful, healthy outdoor pots
There’s nothing like fresh spring containers to brighten a porch, patio, or entryway. But before you choose your flowers and greenery, the real key to success happens at the bottom of the pot.
Healthy roots depend on proper drainage. When water can’t escape, soil becomes compacted and roots can suffer from rot and stress. Starting your containers the smart way ensures your plants thrive all season long.
Step 1: Set up the base for proper drainage
Place your Drain Smart disc in the bottom of your pot fabric side up. This keeps soil in place while allowing excess water to flow out freely.
Drain Smart discs are available in 6", 9", and 12" sizes, and they can be easily trimmed to fit any container you’re using.

Step 2: Add soil and position your plants
Add high-quality potting soil on top of the disc, filling your container about halfway. Arrange your plants, then fill in around them with more soil, gently pressing to secure them in place.
Step 3: Water smartly
Give your container a thorough watering. With proper drainage in place, water can move through the soil as intended—keeping roots moist but never waterlogged.

A simple start makes all the difference
When you begin with smart drainage, everything above the soil line benefits—stronger roots, healthier growth, and more vibrant spring containers.
This season, start every pot from the bottom up.
Plant smarter. Grow better.
